The Sudanese Group for the Defense of Rights and Freedoms has called on the Founding Alliance (TASIS) to immediately release lawyer Magda Hassan Ali Al-Amin and other women human rights defenders detained in Nyala, accusing the authorities of committing serious rights violations.
In a statement, the group said Magda Hassan, a member of both the group and the Darfur Lawyers Association, has been held for several months alongside other women activists in areas under the control of the TASIS on allegations of cooperating with opposing parties.
The group said advocacy efforts had secured the release of several detainees, but Magda Hassan and others remain in custody. It warned that their prolonged detention raises serious concerns, particularly because some of the women reportedly suffer from chronic illnesses.
The statement cited a report by women human rights defenders Nafisa Hajar, Azza Mohamed Ahmed, and Iqbal Ahmed Ali, which documents alleged abuses against women activists in Nyala.
The group also accused both sides of Sudan’s conflict of targeting members of the Darfur Lawyers Association since the war began in April 2023, saying seven of its members have been killed in El Geneina, Nyala, and Khartoum North.
It urged TASIS, which recently appointed a public prosecutor in areas under its control, to release Magda Hassan and all other detainees and end what it described as violations against women human rights defenders.
