Khartoum, November 05 (Darfur24)
The Sudanese Teachers Committee said two of its members in Ombada locality, Khartoum State, were summoned by security authorities as a teachers’ strike entered its third week.
In a statement on Wednesday, the committee identified the teachers as Al-Nayer Al-Tarifi Hamad Al-Nil and Muhammad Adam. It said Adam, who has a broken leg and has been bedridden for more than a month, was taken to the headquarters of the Security and Intelligence Service in Omdurman.
The committee said the two teachers were summoned on allegations of inciting the strike, which is being held under the slogan “a long-term strike”.
It accused the authorities of using intimidation and security restrictions to pressure teachers to end the strike, rather than addressing what it described as the deteriorating conditions in the education sector and teachers’ working conditions.
The committee held the authorities responsible for the safety of the two teachers and called for an end to the summonses and restrictions on union activities. It also urged authorities to respect teachers’ rights to organise and strike, while calling on its members to continue pressing for their demands.
