Al-Mazroub, July 04 (Darfur24)

The death toll from a cholera outbreak in Al-Mazroub, North Kordofan State, has risen to 21, while the number of confirmed infections has exceeded 400 since the disease began spreading in early June, medical sources said on Saturday.

The outbreak is part of a wider cholera epidemic affecting several areas of North and West Kordofan. The Fuga area in Al-Nuhud locality has been among the hardest hit, with at least 80 reported deaths before the disease spread to other localities, including Al-Mazroub.

A nurse at the isolation center in Al-Mazroub Hospital told Darfur24 that five of the 21 deaths were recorded on July 2.

She said more than 400 cholera cases have been confirmed since the outbreak began on June 2, warning that the health situation continues to deteriorate as new infections are reported daily.

According to the nurse, the treatment center registered 52 new cases over the past two days. Around 50 patients are currently receiving treatment, but limited capacity has forced medical staff to accommodate some patients outside the wards, underscoring the urgent need for additional beds despite a recent decline in the number of hospitalized cases.

She added that supplies of intravenous fluids and essential medicines remain insufficient to meet growing demand, despite ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Health and local communities to contain the outbreak.
