Tawila, March 31 (Darfur24)
Dozens of students have begun leaving areas in eastern Jebel Marra for eastern Sudan to sit national exams, amid uncertainty over whether tests will be held in regions under the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid Mohamed Nour.
The Ministry of National Education has scheduled the Sudanese Certificate exams to begin on April 13. Still, parents and activists say the movement’s civilian administration has yet to take clear steps to organize the process locally.
On Monday, groups of students departed from Tawila and surrounding areas, undertaking risky journeys in hopes of reaching exam centers in government-held regions.
Parents told Darfur24 they lost confidence in local arrangements after months of waiting without concrete action. Many said they were forced to send their children despite security risks, including reports of assaults and arrests along the way.
Iman Suleiman, a parent, said the lack of clarity left families with no choice but to send their daughters away without guarantees of safe arrival.
Students also expressed concern. “There are no assurances the exams will take place here,” said Sumaya Abkar, who is traveling east.
Parents warned that hundreds of students may miss the exams due to insecurity and financial constraints, despite earlier indications that arrangements could be made to hold the exams within the movement areas.
