Nyala, March 16 (Darfur24)

An eight-year-old child was killed and two other children injured after a grenade exploded in the city of Nyala in South Darfur State on Thursday afternoon, according to eyewitnesses and local sources.

A relative of the victim told Darfur24 that the children found the grenade in the yard of their home while playing. One of them picked it up, causing it to explode.

The blast killed Mohammed Adam instantly and injured two other children, who were taken to Al-Wahda Hospital in southern Nyala for treatment.

Hand grenades and other explosive remnants of war remain widespread in Nyala following repeated clashes in the city, posing a continuing threat to civilians, particularly children.

In early January, a similar explosion in Nyala’s Popular Market killed three people and injured others after an unidentified individual detonated a grenade. Separate incidents involving unexploded ordnance have also been reported in the city’s main and peripheral markets.

Explosive remnants of war continue to claim the lives of civilians across Darfur, most of them children, amid a severe decline in health services due to the ongoing conflict.
