Kampala, December 18 (Darfur24)
The human rights organization Emergency Lawyers said a child was killed and four civilians injured in a drone strike that hit the city of Atbara in Sudan’s River Nile State on Wednesday.
In a statement, the group said the attack targeted several civilian facilities in Atbara, including an electricity substation, causing power outages in River Nile, Red Sea, and Khartoum states.
The statement added that residential homes were also struck, resulting in the death of a child, injuries to four civilians, and a fire at one of the damaged houses.
Emergency Lawyers strongly condemned the attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, describing them as serious violations of international humanitarian law, particularly the principles of distinction and proportionality under the Geneva Conventions.
The organization held the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) responsible for the attack and its consequences, and called for an immediate end to attacks on civilians and infrastructure.
It also demanded independent and transparent investigations and accountability for all those responsible, to ensure they do not escape justice.
