The United Nations has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan as continued fighting, displacement, and declining humanitarian funding deepen needs across several regions.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said insecurity around El Obeid in North Kordofan State continues to threaten civilians and force people to flee, while others are arriving in the city and surrounding areas in search of safety and humanitarian assistance.
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, said at a daily press briefing that the UN and its partners continue to assist in El Obeid despite the deteriorating security situation.
He said humanitarian partners had provided about two million liters of drinking water to approximately 133,000 people amid severe water shortages in the city.
In West Darfur State, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that fighting in Serba locality had displaced about 18,000 people from more than 20 villages since the previous week. The agency said most of those displaced had crossed the border into Chad in search of safety.
The latest displacement adds to repeated waves of civilian movement in the border localities of West Darfur, where fighting between the Rapid Support Forces and the Joint Force has continued to drive residents from their homes.
OCHA renewed its call on the parties to the conflict to protect civilians and ensure rapid, safe, unhindered, and sustained humanitarian access to all people in need.
