Port Sudan, March 11 (Darfur24)

The Sudanese government on Tuesday called for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to be designated a terrorist organization, while offering no clear position on the recent U.S. decision to include the Islamic Movement in Sudan on its terrorism list.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs made only a brief reference to the U.S. decision, saying that the Sudanese government had “followed the decision of the American government to classify the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organization.”

The statement added that the government “affirms its principled and unwavering position in condemning all forms of terrorism and violent extremism, without exception or selectivity.”

It further stated that all groups committing violations of international humanitarian law and acts of terrorism, crimes against humanity, and war crimes in Sudan should be designated as terrorist organizations.

“From this standpoint, the Government of Sudan calls for responding to the strong demands to classify the rebel Rapid Support Forces as a terrorist group,” the statement said, citing what it described as documented crimes and violations committed by the RSF, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and terrorism.

The ministry also emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s security and stability and taking all necessary measures in accordance with national law and Sudan’s international obligations in combating terrorism and violent extremism.
