Nyala , July 11(Darfur 24)

On Thursday, Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, received a relief convoy of 45 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid. The convoy arrived from Port Sudan, the temporary administrative capital in eastern Sudan, via a long route that passed through several states.

A civil administration official in Nyala Municipality told Darfur 24 that the convoy is affiliated with the World Food Programme and aims to distribute aid to 21 localities in South Darfur State, in addition to several camps for the displaced.

He explained that the convoy carries basic food supplies such as corn and oil, along with mosquito nets, tarpaulins, and large quantities of emergency and chronic disease medications.

He indicated that the distribution will include the Atash, Kalma, Al-Salam, Sakli, and Al-Sareif camps, in addition to the localities of Nyala, Nyala North, Al-Salam, Balil, Kass, Mershing, Al-Wahda, East Jebel Marra, Al-Santa, Baram, Ad Al-Fursan, Kabum, Rahid Al-Bardi, Umm Dafuq, Al-Radom, Shataya, Nitega, Tulus, and Damsu.

Adam Mohammed, one of the convoy drivers, told Darfur 24 that the journey began from Port Sudan, passing through Al-Dabba, then crossed the Kordofan region to the city of Al-Koma and Al-Fasher in North Darfur, before arriving in Nyala..

“The journey lasted almost one month”, added the driver.

He added that the convoy did not encounter any logistical obstacles on its way, and rather received cooperation from the parties to the conflict in the areas they control, which facilitated its safe arrival.

Mohammed confirmed that the convoy began moving toward various localities to distribute aid, anticipating the rainy season, which could lead to the closure of some roads.

It is worth noting that the town of Al-Koma, located 78 kilometers east of El Fasher, witnessed an airstrike last June targeting a World Food Program aid convoy consisting of more than 15 trucks, resulting in deaths and injuries among drivers and escorts.

The Sudanese government and the Rapid Support Forces traded accusations of attacking the WFP aid convoy.
