Khartoum, October 15 (Darfur24)
Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council head and army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said on Thursday that he remained committed to US-sponsored peace efforts, expressing readiness to work with all parties to achieve a just and lasting settlement to the war.
In a post on X, al-Burhan said he had sent a message to US President Donald Trump reaffirming Sudan’s commitment to peace efforts. He added that the government was prepared to engage in good faith to reach a settlement that preserves the country’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and the dignity of its people.
Washington has proposed an immediate 90-day humanitarian truce without preconditions, to be followed by negotiations on a permanent ceasefire and a political process leading to a civilian transition and elections.
The US proposal also includes a United Nations-led mechanism to support limited withdrawals by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from priority areas, including North Darfur and North Kordofan.
In a statement issued on September 22, a US State Department spokesperson said Trump was committed to ending the war and the resulting humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
The spokesperson accused both sides of failing to demonstrate serious commitment to an immediate ceasefire and called for inclusive political dialogue leading to a civilian government.
Washington also said it would seek to increase the cost of continuing the war for the warring parties and the networks supporting them.
Al-Burhan has previously taken positions that differ from Washington’s proposed approach to ending the conflict, linking his acceptance of the US initiative to the withdrawal of RSF forces from cities under their control.
