UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan Pekka Haavisto has concluded a two-day visit to Egypt, where he held talks with Egyptian and Arab officials on the role of Sudan’s neighbors in advancing peace efforts and ending the war.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Haavisto met senior Egyptian officials, including Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, to discuss regional efforts to support peace in Sudan.
The talks also highlighted cooperation among members of the Quartet and Quintet mechanisms and their shared commitment to end the conflict, Dujarric said.
The Quintet comprises the United Nations, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States and the European Union. The Quartet includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt.
Haavisto also met with League of Arab States Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy, with both sides emphasizing continued coordination between the UN and the Arab League to achieve peace in Sudan.
During his visit, Haavisto also engaged with members of the Sudanese community in Cairo to hear their views on the situation in Sudan. He stressed the importance of ensuring that diverse Sudanese diaspora communities have a voice in shaping the country’s future.
The visit followed Haavisto’s recent trip to Sudan and forms part of his efforts to support regional and international initiatives aimed at ending the war and advancing the peace process.
