A senior US official said on Tuesday that the Quartet has reached a final draft of a peace agreement aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan and paving the way for a humanitarian truce.
Massad Boulos, senior adviser to the US president on African and Arab affairs, said in a press statement that the draft document is acceptable to both parties to the conflict and is intended to lead to a ceasefire that would allow humanitarian access.
Boulos said the peace agreement will be submitted to the UN Security Council after being formally endorsed by the Quartet.
He added that the United Nations has prepared a mechanism for the withdrawal of fighters from both sides from specific areas, a step expected to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
According to the US official, the agreement could later be presented to the Peace Council following its discussion at the UN Security Council.
The war in Sudan, which erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces nearly three years ago, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced about 11 million others.
