Khartoum, April 03 (Darfur24)
Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, issued a series of decrees on Thursday appointing a new Chief of Staff and introducing wide-ranging changes in the military’s top leadership.
According to an official statement, Yasser Abdel Rahman Hassan Al-Atta has been appointed Chief of Staff. Al-Atta previously served on the Transitional Sovereignty Council after the 2019 ouster of former president Omar al-Bashir and later held the position of Assistant Commander-in-Chief following the outbreak of war in April 2023.
The reshuffle also included the appointment of several deputies: Lieutenant General Abdul-Khair Abdullah Nasser Darjam (Administration), Lieutenant General Mutasim Abbas Al-Toumi Ahmed (Operations), Lieutenant General Haider Ali Al-Tarifi (Training), and Lieutenant General Khalaf Allah Abdullah Idris (Supply). Lieutenant General Muhammad Ali Ahmed Sabir was named head of Military Intelligence.
Several officers were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. In contrast, others were elevated and subsequently referred to retirement, including senior figures such as Magdi Ibrahim Othman Khalil and Khalid Abdeen Mohamed Ahmed Al-Shami.
Additional retirements included Lieutenant General Dr. Al-Mahdi Abdul Rahman Muhammad Omar and Lieutenant General Nasr Al-Din Abdul Qayyum Ahmed Ali.
The changes come amid ongoing conflict in Sudan and reflect a broader restructuring of the army’s senior command.
