Khartoum, March 26 (Darfur24)

Sudan’s army chief and Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on Wednesday with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy Pekka Haavisto to discuss efforts to end the war and advance a comprehensive peace process.

The visit marks Haavisto’s first trip to Sudan since his appointment in late February, succeeding Ramtane Lamamra.

Speaking after the meeting, Haavisto reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting a ceasefire, emphasizing dialogue and de-escalation as essential steps toward ending the conflict.

“The United Nations remains fully engaged with all parties to promote peace and stability and to deliver humanitarian assistance,” he said, noting that his visit aims to hear perspectives from political and civilian actors.

He also stressed the need to prioritize civilian protection and build trust between the warring sides to create conditions for meaningful progress in negotiations.

Haavisto reiterated the commitment of the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General to Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, underscoring support for a comprehensive dialogue aimed at achieving lasting peace.
