Khartoum, February 27(Darfur 24)

A United Nations plane landed in Khartoum on Thursday, marking the organization’s first flight to the capital since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan nearly three years ago. This move was described as a positive sign of improved prospects for delivering humanitarian aid.

Denise Brown, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, said the flight represented a “significant step” in supporting relief efforts and facilitating access for humanitarian workers and supplies to affected areas. She explained that the plane arrived from Port Sudan, which has been used as a major hub for humanitarian and diplomatic operations since the escalation of fighting.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a bloody war between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. This conflict has led to a widespread collapse of basic services and the displacement of millions of civilians both within and outside the country, amid repeated UN warnings of a deteriorating humanitarian situation and a lack of funding for the response.
