A fire at a displacement site in Tawila, North Darfur State, destroyed 30 shelters housing displaced families, forcing them to seek refuge in open areas, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The IOM said the fire broke out on August 28 at the Al-Umda displacement camp in Tawila. All 30 shelters were destroyed, although no casualties were reported.
The affected families were forced to relocate to open areas within Tawila locality, the agency said.
Tawila, controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid Mohamed Nur, has become a major destination for people fleeing the war. The area currently hosts about 707,000 displaced people, most of whom fled El Fasher.
Many displaced people in Tawila live in overcrowded locations with limited access to basic services and adequate shelter, amid shortages of food, livelihood opportunities and humanitarian assistance.
