Khartoum, October 31 (Darfur24)

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday condemned escalating drone attacks by parties to Sudan’s conflict, warning of their devastating impact on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

In a statement, his spokesperson said drone strikes had killed hundreds of civilians, including women and children, across Sudan and in the Abyei region, which lies between Sudan and South Sudan. The attacks constitute violations of international humanitarian law, the statement said.

Guterres condemned attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including healthcare facilities, and urged the warring parties to protect civilians and essential services.

He called on the parties to agree without delay to a cessation of hostilities as a first step towards ending the conflict.

The statement comes amid an escalation in drone attacks on power stations, markets and hospitals, causing widespread damage.

Guterres renewed his appeal for the parties to engage in good-faith mediation efforts, stressing that the United Nations remained ready to support initiatives aimed at achieving a sustainable political solution that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
