Tunjur Reservoir, February 16 (Darfur24)
A local official said Sunday that financial assistance has been distributed to roughly 2,800 displaced people sheltering in Masal camp in Tawila locality, North Darfur State, most of whom fled fighting in El Fasher, Tabit town, and surrounding villages.
Masal camp, located in the Tunjur Reservoir area, is considered the second-largest displacement site in Tawila, hosting more than 6,000 displaced people in addition to members of host communities and families recently uprooted by insecurity in the New Reservoir area.
A community leader inside the camp told Darfur24 that the humanitarian organization Solidarity International began distributing the cash assistance late last week. He said the first phase targeted about 2,800 displaced individuals to help them meet urgent basic needs, particularly with the approach of Ramadan.
The distribution coincided with a visit by a senior delegation from the civilian authority affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdul Wahid al-Nur. Residents used the visit to highlight worsening humanitarian conditions in the camp, especially a persistent shortage of drinking water.
Displaced families in Tawila’s camps continue to face acute shortages of essential services, including water, food, and shelter, amid overcrowding and rising humanitarian needs. The Tawila area remains one of the main destinations for people fleeing violence in Darfur and is estimated to shelter hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians, the majority arriving after the escalation of fighting in North Darfur.
