Wad Banda, January 05 (Darfur24)

Teachers in Wad Banda locality, West Kordofan State, are facing threats of prosecution from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) if they fail to resume classes, as authorities push to reopen schools that have remained closed since the outbreak of war, local sources said.

Sources told Darfur24 that the RSF decided last week to reopen schools in the locality and instructed teachers to return to work, warning that legal action would be taken against those who do not comply. Despite the directive, several teachers have reportedly stopped teaching, while some parents have declined to send their children back to school, citing security concerns.

The sources added that the RSF also suspended Quranic teaching in traditional religious schools (khalawi) during the morning period, ordering that instruction be limited to evening hours only.

Amid the prolonged closure of government schools, some communities in the Kordofan region have turned to traditional Islamic schools as an alternative means of educating their children.

Government-run schools in many parts of Sudan have remained closed since the start of the war, leaving thousands of children without access to formal education.
