The Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, has urged all Sudanese citizens residing in the city and its suburbs to stay home and not leave, in light of the security tensions that have been raging in Tripoli since Monday.
In an official statement issued Monday, the embassy called for extreme caution and avoiding movement within or outside the city until stability and calm return.
The embassy emphasized that these recommendations are intended to ensure the safety and security of the Sudanese community in light of the current circumstances.
The announcement comes after clashes broke out in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on Monday evening between rival armed groups, according to Agence France-Presse correspondents.
Later, the Ministry of Defense of the Government of National Accord announced control of the entire Abu Salim area, southwest of the capital. This area is under the control of the Stability Support Apparatus, affiliated with the Libyan Presidential Council, and is led by Abdul Ghani al-Kikli, one of the most prominent leaders of armed groups throughout the years of the crisis in Libya.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed “grave concern” over the deteriorating security situation in Tripoli, with heavy fighting intensifying in densely populated civilian neighborhoods.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the mission called on all parties to immediately cease fighting and restore calm, reminding them of their obligations to protect civilians at all times.
The mission warned that “attacks on civilians and civilian targets may amount to war crimes,” affirming its full support for the efforts of notables and community leaders to de-escalate the situation.
The Ministry of Education of the Government of National Unity in Libya announced that it had granted discretionary authority to education supervisors to suspend classes and exams on Tuesday at the education supervisory offices in the municipalities of Greater Tripoli, due to the current security situation in the city and the ministry’s concern for the safety of students, teaching staff, and administrative personnel.
The University of Tripoli also announced the suspension of classes, exams, and administrative work in all university faculties, departments, and offices until further notice.
