More than 3,400 displaced people have arrived in Tawila, North Darfur State, since the beginning of September, amid worsening humanitarian and sanitation conditions, according to the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees.
The coordination said 121 families, comprising about 605 people, arrived in Tawila between September 21 and 22, bringing the total number of new arrivals since the beginning of the month to 634 families, or about 3,407 people.
Adam Rijal, the coordination’s spokesperson, said most of the recent arrivals were women, children and elderly people. Some families had been displaced more than three times from areas including Tora, Dar al-Salam, Dar Sumayat, Aluna and Kafoud before reaching Tawila.
He said the newly displaced are facing shortages of food, medicine, clean water, shelter and healthcare, with cases of malnutrition reported among children and women.
The coordination warned that the lack of toilets and sanitation facilities is forcing displaced families to defecate in the open, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases, including acute diarrhea, cholera and typhoid.
It called for urgent humanitarian assistance, including food, medicine, drinking water, shelter and sanitation facilities, as well as protection and psychosocial support for women and children.
The coordination warned that continued displacement and deteriorating sanitation could trigger a wider health crisis in Tawila, where humanitarian conditions are already being strained by the ongoing war, drought and limited aid.
