The Emergency Court in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, has released several detainees accused of communicating with hostile foreign entities after finding insufficient evidence against them, local sources told Darfur24.
Three identical sources said trader Abdullah Hussein Wadi was among those released. He was arrested by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intelligence on Friday at the eastern entrance to Nyala while travelling to El Daein.
The sources said RSF intelligence officers searched Wadi’s mobile phone and found contacts with phone numbers in Uganda and Egypt, leading to his arrest and subsequent referral to the Emergency Court.
Wadi appeared before the court on Sunday alongside several other detainees, and the court ordered their release due to insufficient evidence, according to the sources.
The releases come as hundreds of people remain detained in prisons and facilities controlled by the RSF, including Daqris and Koria prisons in Nyala. Some detainees have yet to be brought to trial, according to local sources and human rights and media reports.
Detention practices in areas controlled by Sudan’s warring parties have drawn human rights criticism, particularly over prolonged detention without charges being resolved or detainees being brought before a court.
