Heavy rains and flooding in Abu Karshola, South Kordofan State, have displaced about 138 families after 138 homes were destroyed and another 133 were partially damaged, according to preliminary estimates by field teams from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The affected families were displaced from the villages of Fajuj, Al-Bayda, Hajar Sanina, Al-Rusaris, Al-Manajil, Al-Jawad, Jabrouna, Al-Rukib, Al-Bubaya and Al-Fayed Umm Abdullah. They sought temporary shelter in open areas within the region.
IOM said the figures remain preliminary and may change as field verification continues. Its Displacement Tracking Matrix teams are monitoring developments and population movements in the affected areas.
The latest displacement comes as heavy rains and flooding continue to cause widespread damage across parts of Sudan during the rainy season, worsening conditions for communities already affected by war and displacement.
Flooding has caused significant damage across the Kordofan region during August, displacing families and destroying hundreds of homes amid an already deteriorating humanitarian situation.
On August 21, heavy rains and flash floods displaced about 143 families in Abu Karshola and Al-Tadamun areas of South Kordofan, according to IOM field teams.
In Abu Karshola, 94 homes were destroyed and 56 others partially damaged. In Al-Atafa village in Al-Tadamun locality, flooding destroyed 49 homes and partially damaged another 38, forcing affected families to seek temporary shelter in open areas.
The damage coincides with flooding in other parts of Kordofan, while North Kordofan has also experienced widespread destruction during the rainy season.
Flooding is placing additional pressure on communities in Kordofan, where natural disasters are compounding the effects of war and displacement. Families who lose their homes are often forced to shelter in open areas or temporary sites, increasing their needs for shelter, food, clean water and other basic services.
