Nyala, May 20 (Darfur24)
The Health Ministry of the alternative RSF-affiliated TASIS administration announced that 371 people have died from measles across South, North, and East Darfur states, amid ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak through large-scale vaccination campaigns.
In statements published on Facebook, the ministry said South Darfur recorded more than 10,000 suspected measles cases and 172 deaths. Health teams reportedly vaccinated over 1.3 million children against measles and rubella out of a target of nearly 1.4 million.
East Darfur recorded 1,241 suspected cases and 36 deaths, while North Darfur reported 3,593 suspected cases and 163 deaths.
The ministry added that vaccination campaigns are continuing in North Darfur despite difficulties reaching remote villages and conflict-affected areas. Authorities said health surveillance systems and rapid response measures have been activated to contain outbreak hotspots.
In Central Darfur, officials said 809,534 children had been vaccinated out of a target of 814,878, achieving a coverage rate exceeding 97 percent.
The ministry also reported that five vaccination campaigns conducted in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states benefited around 97,849 children as part of broader disease prevention efforts.
Separately, the ministry announced the detection of cases of acute watery diarrhea in Al-Nahud locality, saying emergency measures had been introduced, including isolating contacts, providing treatment and intravenous fluids, establishing a health emergency center, and monitoring water sources to limit the spread of infection.
