The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Wednesday that at least two children were killed and six others injured in a drone strike on a market in Al-Rahad, North Kordofan State, warning that children continue to bear the brunt of Sudan’s conflict.
In a statement, UNICEF said the attack also killed four adults and injured more than 20 people. The injured children were between six and 14 years old.
UNICEF Representative in Sudan Sheldon Yett described the attack as “a stark reminder of the horrific toll the conflict continues to take on children,” stressing that markets should never become places of death and destruction.
He warned that attention on the fighting in El Obeid should not overshadow the worsening humanitarian situation in other parts of North Kordofan, as well as in Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan, parts of North Darfur, and conflict-affected areas of Blue Nile State.
UNICEF said continued attacks are destroying homes, schools, health facilities, water systems, and markets, depriving children of essential services while worsening displacement and psychological trauma.
The agency also warned that insecurity and attacks on supply routes are restricting humanitarian access and renewed its call on all parties to protect civilians, respect international humanitarian law, and ensure safe and unhindered delivery of aid to affected communities.
