Nairobi, April 24 (Darfur24)

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander, Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as “Hemedti,” has ordered the suspension of a committee investigating conditions at Daqris prison in Nyala, South Darfur, amid allegations of detainees being released in exchange for money, multiple sources told Darfur24.

Sources said the decision followed reports implicating RSF officers in the release of detainees, including senior military figures, after receiving large payments to secure their freedom.

The committee, headed by Deputy Prosecutor Ahmed Al-Nour Al-Hala, had been formed by Hemedti to examine the conditions of civilian detainees at Daqris prison, following growing reports of deaths and worsening humanitarian conditions inside the facility.

Hemedti had also instructed the committee to release individuals not found to be involved in hostile activities, as well as elderly detainees and those suffering from chronic illnesses.

In March, the RSF released 260 detainees from Daqris prison in what was described as the first and largest batch, drawing significant public attention.

Thousands of detainees remain held at the facility under deteriorating conditions, with declining access to food and healthcare, raising concerns over a deepening humanitarian crisis at one of the largest detention centers in the Darfur region.
