Al Salam, February 11 (Darfur24)

Displaced residents of Al Salam camp, south of Nyala city in South Darfur State, say worsening health and living conditions, coupled with limited basic services, are contributing to the spread of disease inside the camp.

Isaac Abkar, head of the camp’s youth committee, told Darfur24 that the health situation has deteriorated sharply, with tuberculosis, measles, and malnutrition increasingly affecting residents, particularly children.

He said the camp is served by only three health centers, one of which has stopped operating due to lack of funding, while another is functioning at reduced capacity, placing additional strain on already limited medical services.

Abkar added that access to safe drinking water remains a major challenge. Only one water station is currently operating with support from the CARE organization, while most other water sources rely on commercial pumps, creating an added financial burden for families.

According to local reports, Al Salam camp shelters more than 128,000 displaced people who have lived there since the outbreak of conflict in Darfur. The camp has also received around 8,000 new arrivals fleeing recent fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
