Kabkabiya, January 14 (Darfur24)
Local sources in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, reported heavy aerial bombardment on Monday targeting the town of Ghara al-Zawiya on the outskirts of the city, resulting in the death of a senior Rapid Support Forces commander.
A local leader told Darfur24 that a drone, believed to belong to the Sudanese army, struck a four-wheel-drive combat vehicle carrying Commander Mohamed Saleh, known as “Al-Nina,” killing him instantly and setting the vehicle on fire.
The source added that the drone continued flying over the area in repeated passes, triggering fear and panic among residents and forcing the closure of the local market.
Another source in Kabkabiya said loud explosions were heard in the vicinity, though the exact locations of the strikes could not be confirmed. He described a state of panic among citizens due to the continuous drone activity over the city.
Areas under RSF control in Darfur have experienced sustained aerial attacks in recent months, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries. The latest strikes last week targeted Mellit and Fataberno in North Darfur, and Kutum in South Darfur.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in intense fighting between the Sudanese army and allied forces on one side, and the Rapid Support Forces on the other, with drones frequently used in attacks on both civilian and military sites.
