El Obeid, October 10 (Darfur24)
At least six people were injured, including one in critical condition, in drone attacks on residential areas in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, early Friday, according to three sources who spoke to Darfur24.
A medical source at Social Security Hospital told Darfur24 that six people were wounded, including one who required urgent surgery.
A Sudanese army military source said drones launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) flew over the city and fired munitions that struck civilians and damaged homes. The source also reported that six civilian vehicles caught fire.
The source added that army air defences shot down several drones before they could attack civilian and military sites.
Ismail Mohamed, a resident of El Obeid, said the drone flights caused panic among residents. He also reported smoke rising from several parts of the city and said anti-aircraft fire could be heard across different neighbourhoods.
Last week, drone attacks believed to have been carried out by the RSF killed five people and injured more than 27 others in El Obeid, according to previous reports.
North Kordofan has witnessed intensified fighting between the Sudanese army and allied forces on one side and the RSF on the other. Army-aligned forces have recently taken control of several areas in the state, including Al-Mazroub and Sodari.
Drone attacks have become increasingly frequent during Sudan’s war, which began in April 2023, with the warring parties using them against military positions and populated areas across several states.
