Deterioration of humanitarian conditions for displaced persons from Blue Nile

Damazin, October 02 (Darfur24)

The Civil Society Initiative in the Blue Nile has warned that humanitarian and health conditions are worsening across the region, with tens of thousands of displaced people facing severe shortages of food, water, shelter, and healthcare.

In a statement, the initiative said field estimates indicate that more than 25,000 people displaced from Qaysan are currently in the Wad Al-Mahi area, where they face critical shortages of necessities and health services.

It added that more than 100,000 people in Abu Qami, Dandan Al-Azaza, Dandan Al-Sheikh Shira Abli, Dar Al-Aman, Babnusa and Abu Ashr are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to field estimates.

The initiative also reported that more than 45,000 people displaced from Khawar Hassan, Karnakran and Balbong have moved to the Balang area in Kurmuk locality. Some displaced people have reportedly resorted to eating tree leaves because of hunger and a lack of food.

The group warned of a deteriorating health situation caused by shortages of medicines, emergency supplies and maternity services. It said field reports indicate repeated deaths among pregnant women in some areas because of difficulties accessing treatment and health facilities.

The initiative called on the warring parties, national health authorities, the United Nations, humanitarian organizations, donors, the African Union and other international and local actors to take urgent action to address the worsening crisis.
