The Sudanese community in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, has opened registration for Sudanese refugees and residents wishing to voluntarily return to Sudan, beginning Monday, September 14.
In a statement, the community said registration and applications would be received at the Sudanese Club in N’Djamena daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for one week.
The program is limited to returns to areas under the control of the Sudanese army, according to the statement.
The registration aims to establish a database of individuals and families wishing to return and prepare for logistical arrangements, including transportation and administrative procedures, in coordination with relevant authorities, the community said.
It called on those wishing to participate to register within the specified period and bring any available identification and other documents to facilitate the process.
More than 941,000 Sudanese have crossed into Chad since the outbreak of the war in April 2023, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). They join about 410,000 Sudanese refugees who were already in Chad before the war, bringing the total number of Sudanese refugees in the country to more than 1.3 million.
