Um Sayala, July 25 (Darfur24)

Fighting erupted in the Umm Sayala area of North Kordofan State on Saturday after the Sudanese army launched an offensive, ending months of relative calm on the ground.

Military sources told Darfur24 that clashes broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and allied Joint Force fighters on one side, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the other.

A senior military source told Darfur24 that Abdul Aziz Niri, a Joint Force commander known as “Mr. Attack,” was killed during the fighting.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the Sudanese Ministry of Defence said the army and allied forces were advancing along the Um Sayala axis in North Kordofan and had inflicted heavy losses on the RSF.

The RSF has not officially commented on the fighting. However, accounts affiliated with the group circulated photos and videos on social media that they claimed showed RSF fighters inside Umm Sayala after the clashes.

Members of the Joint Force also shared videos they said were filmed in the same area following the fighting. Darfur24 could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage or the competing claims made by either side.
