Um Dukhun, March 04 (Darfur24)
The Emergency Rooms Coordination Council in the Sudanese border town of Um Dukhun announced on Tuesday that three children died in a fire that broke out at Abu Dhar camp for displaced people.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the council said the blaze erupted in the early hours of the morning in the southern section of the camp, destroying five homes. Three families lost children in the incident.
The victims were aged 13, seven, and nine months, and were inside one of the houses when it caught fire.
The council expressed deep sorrow and concern over the repeated outbreaks of fire in the area, noting that it had previously warned of the risks associated with them. It urged residents to exercise caution when using open flames inside homes, particularly during the strong seasonal winds, and to ensure fires are fully extinguished after cooking while keeping flammable materials away from children.
Last week, a separate fire swept through the Um Dukhun fuel market, completely burning seven shops and damaging others nearby. Earlier this year, similar fires were reported in the western and central districts of the town, causing major property losses and livestock deaths.
Several cities across Darfur and Kordofan have witnessed frequent fires during the summer months due to strong winds and the widespread use of highly flammable local building materials.
