Nyala, February 19 (Darfur24)

Several detainees from the town of Muhajiriya in East Darfur State, including a community leader, were released on Thursday by the Rapid Support Forces following mediation efforts led by local dignitaries who traveled to Nyala to negotiate their freedom.

Multiple sources said the release came after a delegation of community leaders and notables from Muhajiriya met RSF officials in Nyala as part of efforts to resolve the case.

On January 21, RSF forces arrested 16 notables and young residents from Muhajiriya, including tribal leader Omar Adibo and Ahmed Jadu, before transferring them to Nyala.

Sources told Darfur24 that the detainees were released after mediation by the local delegation, noting that unspecified sums of money were reportedly paid during the process. They added that no formal charges were filed against those freed.

Residents also stated that Adibo, who heads the rural court in Muhajiriya, had faced pressure from RSF intelligence to publicly declare support for the “establishment” government but declined and maintained a neutral position, according to their account.
