Al-Tuwaisha, February 10 (Darfur24)
The emergency room in Um Katkout town, part of Al-Tuwaisha locality southeast of El-Fashir in North Darfur State, reported significant losses following a large fire that broke out in the town’s western neighborhood on Sunday.
In a brief statement posted on its official Facebook page and reviewed by Darfur24, the emergency room reported that the fire destroyed approximately 35 homes and partially damaged 16 others. The affected houses were sheltering approximately 73 displaced families from various villages and towns.
The statement noted that most of the homes were constructed from local materials such as straw, which contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, fueled by strong winds and overcrowded living conditions, in the absence of effective firefighting resources.
The blaze left hundreds of people displaced under extremely difficult humanitarian conditions. It destroyed large amounts of personal property, including crops, household belongings, money, and several horse-drawn carts that served as a primary means of transport in the area.
The emergency room expressed deep regret over the incident and issued an urgent appeal to humanitarian organizations and the North Darfur Emergency Room Council to intervene immediately by providing shelter, food, and medical assistance before conditions deteriorate further.
Fires are a recurring hazard in many towns across Darfur and Kordofan, particularly during the winter season, due to strong winds and the widespread use of flammable building materials.
