Nyala, January 24 (Darfur24)

Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, witnessed a period of relative calm and improved security last week, following weeks of tension marked by armed robberies and rising crime. Residents reported a noticeable decline in incidents on roads and in city markets.

Despite the improved security situation, a traffic accident on the Nyala–Kass road on Wednesday resulted in the death of a woman and injuries to others, drawing renewed calls from residents for stricter road safety measures.

On the humanitarian front, community initiatives continued to support displaced families living in shelters across the city. The Darfur Relief Initiative distributed winter clothing to 149 children at the Mahira School shelter. Meanwhile, the Darfur Peace and Development Kitchen launched a program providing daily meals and drinking water to four shelters, starting with Al-Humaira shelter, which hosts 562 families displaced from Zamzam camp and the villages of Qoz Bina and Tabit.

In the sports sector, local and camp league competitions continued in Nyala, bringing together 30 teams from cities and localities across Darfur.

The group stage concluded with 16 teams advancing to the next round, after 192 goals were scored over five rounds. The local team, Tels, achieved a perfect record of 15 points, emerging as one of the tournament’s strongest performers.
