Nyala, January 14 (Darfur24)

Medical staff at Nyala Teaching Hospital have launched a partial strike over unpaid salaries, leaving the internal medicine department closed for the past two months, residents and hospital sources confirmed on Wednesday.

Medical sources told Darfur24 that doctors and nurses in the department have not received their monthly salaries despite repeated promises from the hospital administration. Patients have been forced to seek care at private clinics, often at higher costs.

A relative of a patient from Kutum said they visited the hospital for three consecutive days without finding the internal medicine doctor and were eventually compelled to go to Al-Abrar Clinic due to the unaffordability of treatment.

The hospital administration and South Darfur’s Ministry of Health oversee the internal medicine department, including medical supply provision and staff payments. Meanwhile, Doctors Without Borders continues to support the women’s, obstetrics, pediatrics, and emergency departments, paying staff incentives and maintaining medical facilities.

A source in the state health ministry added that the Al-Ayt organization has begun maintenance and rehabilitation work on the hospital’s emergency and intensive care facilities, aiming to restore full service.
