Abu Dhabi, January 09 (Darfur24)
The US President’s advisor for the Middle East and the Horn of Africa, Massad Polis, announced on Thursday that meetings were held with senior officials in the United Arab Emirates to discuss efforts toward signing a humanitarian truce in Sudan.
The meetings took place a day after similar talks Polis held in Saudi Arabia, focusing on developments in Sudan and ways to encourage the two parties to the conflict to agree to a humanitarian ceasefire.
In a post on his X platform account, Polis said, “Productive meetings were held in Abu Dhabi with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates; His Highness Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and National Security Advisor; His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; and His Excellency Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State.”
He added, “We discussed the urgent need to reach a humanitarian truce in Sudan and to implement it quickly to end the suffering, along with other critical regional issues. President Trump is committed to peace.”
The Abu Dhabi meetings took place hours after Polis held talks in Riyadh with Saudi officials on the Sudanese crisis.
Polis stated on X that he met with Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman Al Saud, Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Al-Khuraiji, and Political Affairs Advisor Musab bin Mohammed Al-Farhan.
“The discussions focused on our joint efforts, in cooperation with our regional partners, to reach a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan,” Polis said, adding that the talks also addressed ways to strengthen the US-Saudi partnership to advance regional issues.
Following these discussions, a Saudi delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Al-Khuraiji arrived in Port Sudan, where it met with the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.
In a press statement, the Sovereignty Council said the meeting addressed “the peace initiative sponsored by the Saudi Crown Prince and US President Donald Trump, which aims to resolve the Sudanese crisis and bring peace to Sudan, in addition to the current regional situation.”
