Kordofan, November 11 (Darfur24)

Residents of rural areas surrounding Al-Nuhud in West Kordofan State are facing a severe water crisis, with the price of a barrel of water rising to 20,000 Sudanese pounds, according to residents.

Communities in the region depend largely on seasonal rainwater stored in cement basins and baobab tree trunks for drinking and livestock.

However, with the onset of the dry season, water shortages have worsened.

A resident from northern Al-Nuhud told Darfur24 on Monday that the crisis escalated at the start of the summer. “The price of a barrel of water has reached 20,000 pounds, and many families can no longer afford it,” he said.

Citizens reported a shortage of functional water sources, noting that the main water supply system in Al-Nuhud city is currently out of service.

Additionally, several village water stations are non-operational and require maintenance, as well as protection from looting and theft.

Rural areas of Kordofan face recurring water shortages each summer due to limited groundwater sources, population growth, and large numbers of livestock, placing added pressure on already strained water resources.
