Adré, October 31 (Darfur24)

Chadian authorities closed the Adré border crossing with Sudan on Thursday, according to several sources, as conflicting explanations circulated about the move.

The Adré crossing is the main entry point for food, commercial goods, and humanitarian aid supplied by international organizations and United Nations agencies into Sudan.

The sources told Darfur24 that Chadian authorities halted the movement of horse-drawn carts locally known as karro from transporting fuel and food supplies to the Sudanese town of Adikong.

The closure reportedly followed a decision by elements affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to impose fees on carts carrying fuel from Adré to border areas.

Sources added that Chad had previously permitted the passage of donkey carts while barring trucks and vehicles loaded with goods from crossing into Sudan.

A joint community committee has since held meetings with Chadian authorities in Adré to discuss ways to resolve the issue, after officials cited the imposition of new levies by armed Sudanese groups on fuel carts entering Sudan as the reason for the closure.
