Karnoi, October 20 (Darfur24)

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Monday that hundreds of families have been displaced from the town of Abu Gamra in Kornoi locality, North Darfur, amid renewed fighting.

On Wednesday, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control of Abu Gamra, located about 200 kilometers northwest of El Fasher. Forces allied with the army announced the following day that they had retaken the town.

In a statement obtained by Darfur 24, the IOM said 1,500 people were displaced from Abu Gamra on October 16 due to escalating insecurity.

The displaced families have fled to several locations within the Kornoi locality as tensions and instability continue in the region.

Abu Gamra was previously under the control of the Sudan Liberation Forces Alliance, led by Tahir Hajar, a member of the Sovereign Council in the “Tasis” coalition government.

The town holds strategic importance, connecting Kabkabiya, Kutum, Al-Sareif Bani Hussein, Saraf Omra, Karnoi, and Al-Tina.

The Rapid Support Forces currently control most areas of North Darfur, with the exception of Tawila locality, held by the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid al-Nur, and the city of El Fasher, which has been the scene of ongoing clashes since May 11, 2024.
