Roro, October 6 (Darfur 24)
Family members of Abkar Yahya Ishaq, a cargo worker, say he died after being detained and tortured by military intelligence personnel in the Roro area of Blue Nile State.
A family source, who preferred anonymity, told Darfur24 that Yahya, who worked at a local store, got into a verbal altercation with a member of military intelligence when the latter attempted to bypass a long queue to buy sugar. Yahya reportedly told him he had to wait his turn like other customers.
The source added that the soldier returned shortly afterward with two colleagues, who arrested Yahya. He was detained for two days and subjected to severe torture.
“The victim was released at the end of September in critical condition,” the source said. “The family tried to transfer him from Roro to the city of Damazin for treatment, but he died on the way in the Agadi area before reaching the hospital.”
The Roro Workers’ Union condemned what it described as a “heinous crime” that led to the death of its member, holding military intelligence personnel in Roro fully responsible for the incident.
The union called on legal authorities to urgently investigate the case and bring the perpetrators to justice, stressing that those responsible must face the harshest penalties to prevent future violations.
It also noted that the deceased was the sole breadwinner for two families and left behind several children who now face an uncertain future.
