El Fasher, September 22 (Darfur24)
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported Monday that thousands of people continue to flee Abu Shouk Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp and El Fasher city in North Darfur, as fighting intensifies.
Since August, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have advanced into several areas of El Fasher, including Abu Shouk camp, which has endured artillery and drone attacks since May 11, 2024.
In a statement obtained by Darfur 24, the IOM said that approximately 7,500 individuals were displaced from the Abu Shouk camp and the city of El Fasher between September 17 and 19, due to the increasing insecurity.
The organization noted that most of the displaced remain within El Fasher locality, where conditions are tense and rapidly deteriorating.
Residents told Darfur24 on Sunday that all water sources in El Fasher have been cut off, leaving families stranded without access to clean water. The city also faces a near-total collapse of healthcare: 95% of hospitals and health centers are out of service, with severe shortages of medical supplies.
This has led to rising deaths among the wounded and sick, particularly pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses, and those injured by shelling.
The RSF has imposed a tight siege on El Fasher since April 2023, in a bid to capture the city, the Sudanese army’s last stronghold in Darfur.
