Nyala, August 17(Darfur 24)
A number of farmers in South Darfur State expressed their fear that the agricultural season will be disrupted this fall due to erratic rainfall.
Farmers in Darfur, particularly South Darfur, rely primarily on rain-fed agriculture during the fall season.
Farmer Siddiq Yaqoub from Saniya Delaba in Al Salam locality told Darfur 24 that they delayed plowing this year due to the belated rainfall, which could cause some crops, such as peanuts, to fail.
He pointed out that at this time of year, farmers should have completed weeding of their farms.
He added, “August is always known for its heavy rainfall , but this has not happened this year.”
Farmer Ahmed Malik from Kass locality told Darfur 24 that rain fell only once this August. He explained that some crops were affected by delay in rainfall.
Farmers from the localities of Balil and Katila told Darfur 24 about slow crop growth due to erratic rainfall.
They indicated that some farmers had replanted their lands because the first plowing had failed due to poor rainfall compared to previous seasons.
The localities of Al-Salam, Katila, Balil, and Gereida in South Darfur are known for their maize and peanut production, with the state capital, Nyala, relying heavily on these localities in terms of crops.
