El Fasher , June 23(Darfur 24)
The United Nations International Organization for Migration reported on Sunday that residents of El Fasher, North Darfur, continue to flee their homes due to escalating security tensions.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been launching attacks on El Fasher since May 10, 2024, in an attempt to seize the last army stronghold in Darfur. However, the army and allied joint forces are fiercely defending the city.
The organization said in a statement obtained by Darfur 24 that “253 families were displaced between June 18 and 21 from Abu Shouk camp and El Fasher city, due to escalating security tensions and deteriorating economic conditions.”
It noted that these families moved to other areas within El Fasher locality, as well as areas in El Sereif and Tawila localities.
The ongoing conflict in El Fasher has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with most of the city’s residents now relying on “ambaz”—the leftover peanuts left over after oil extraction—as a food source.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) maintain a tight grip on large parts of the eastern neighborhoods and some of the southern neighborhoods of El Fasher, while the army controls the western and northern neighborhoods, the city center, and parts of the southern neighborhoods.
