Debaibat , June 11(Darfur 24)

Thousands of people fleeing the town of Dabaibat and neighboring areas are facing tragic conditions in the open air on the road leading to the cities of Abu Zabad and Al-Fula in West Kordofan State, amid a lack of humanitarian response.

Mohammed Othman, one of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) who fled Debaibat, described the health situation as catastrophic, with diseases spreading among the displaced people who are living in the open air without shelter or medicine, leading to a high death toll, especially among children.

He added, “In the past few days, more than 70 people, including children, have died in Abu Zabad Hospital, while others died on the way to the hospital.”

Darfur 24 could not verify these figures from other sources due to the difficulty of communicating with the area.

The Debaibat and Hamadi areas in South Kordofan, and neighboring areas, have witnessed an escalation in armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since the beginning of last May.

Mohamed Osman painted a bleak picture of the plight of thousands of stranded civilians, sleeping under trees on the road from Jebel Al-Finger to Al-Fula, amid a lack of shelters and humanitarian aid.

With the worsening drinking water crisis, the displaced are relying on “hafayir,” which are now completely dry, and what is available is undrinkable, according to Osman.

He added that hunger is no less deadly than thirst, as the displaced have not received any kind of food aid since their flight, and that children are the most affected group, as many of them sleep in the open. For consecutive nights without food or clean water, diarrhea, fever, and malnutrition are widespread.

Mohammed Othman noted that the waves of displacement included residents of Debaibat, Al-Hamadi, Shushaya, Umm Saada, and Kazgil, all of whom are facing similar conditions. He emphasized that the humanitarian situation in these areas amounts to a catastrophe.

The International Organization for Migration stated that 1,821 families were displaced from the town of Al-Dubaibat on May 29, 2025, due to the ongoing armed clashes that expanded into civilian areas.
