Kalma, February 11 (Darfur24)

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has commenced implementing a program to support small income-generating projects for displaced people in Kalma camp, east of Nyala in South Darfur State, aiming to strengthen livelihoods and reduce reliance on aid.

Ishaq Mohammed Abdullah, head of Kalma camp, told Darfur24 that beneficiary registration started last week among camp residents in preparation for providing support for small business initiatives.

He said 130 displaced people were selected for the project according to NRC criteria, from an initial pool of 160 applicants who completed the first registration phase.

Abdullah explained that each beneficiary will receive financial support tailored to the scale of the proposed business activity outlined in their application.

He added that such livelihood projects represent a practical intervention for displaced communities, helping families generate income while reducing the need to leave the camp in search of work.

Kalma camp has sheltered roughly 300,000 displaced people since the outbreak of conflict in Darfur and continues to receive new arrivals fleeing violence linked to the ongoing fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
