Port Sudan ,June 1(Darfur 24)

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Sunday that the recent wave of attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in Sudan constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

It noted that Al-Daman Hospital in El Obeid, North Kordofan State, was attacked by a drone on May 30, killing at least six health workers and wounding more than 15 others.

It explained that patients and medical workers found themselves in the crossfire inside a facility dedicated to healing , emphasizing that hospitals are not battlefields and are protected under international law.

The office reported that the World Food Programme headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur, was repeatedly bombed, causing extensive damage to a key humanitarian facility.

It confirmed that the Rapid Support Forces carried out both attacks.

He added, “These facilities are a vital lifeline amid the worsening humanitarian crisis. Targeting humanitarian facilities puts millions of people at risk and deprives them of the basic aid they depend on for their survival.”

The Office demanded that these attacks cease immediately and called on all parties involved in the conflict to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians and civilian property.

It continued, “Humanitarian facilities and personnel must never be targeted, and anyone who commits such attacks must be held accountable.”

Civilian facilities, including hospitals, schools, and power plants, have been subjected to continuous attacks since the outbreak of the war on April 15, 2023.
