Nairobi, December 31 (Darfur24)

The commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti,” has ordered the formation of a committee to review conditions in RSF-run prisons and detention centers, following reports of detainee deaths under unclear circumstances, sources said.

According to the sources, the committee is headed by Deputy Prosecutor Maulana Ahmed Al-Nour Al-Hala and has been tasked with assessing conditions in all prisons and detention centers affiliated with the RSF.

The sources said Hemedti directed the release of detainees against whom initial investigations did not establish involvement in hostile acts against the RSF, as well as the release of elderly detainees and those suffering from chronic illnesses.

They added that local leaders and influential figures within the founding alliance informed Hemedti of the deteriorating conditions inside Daqris prison, located south of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, prompting the swift formation of the committee.

Detainees at Daqris prison are reported to be living under extremely harsh conditions due to poor health care and inadequate food supplies. The facility reportedly holds thousands of civilian and military detainees.

In recent days, Adam Ali, the former acting Director-General of the Ministry of Finance in East Darfur State, died inside Daqris prison. A source close to his family told Darfur24 that his death resulted from torture and complications related to diabetes.
