January 25, 2025 New York – Darfur24 A Spokesperson stated that UN Secretary-General António Guterres is calling for an urgent and genuine dialogue between the conflicting parties to achieve an immediate cessation of hostilities and prevent further harm to Sudanese civilians.

The Spokesperson for the Secretary-General emphasized in a statement published on UN news website that a lasting solution to the conflict can only be achieved through an inclusive political process.

Guterres is deeply concerned about the recent escalation in fighting in Sudan, particularly around Al-Jaili Oil Refinery north of Khartoum and in El-Fasher, the Capital of North Darfur State.

The Army managed to regain control of Khartoum Refinery in Al-Jaili area after it was destroyed, with the Army and RSF exchanging accusations of setting it ablaze.

The statement urged all parties to refrain from actions that could have serious consequences for Sudan and the region, including severe economic and environmental repercussions. It also reminded them of their obligations under international law, including the protection of civilians, civilian infrastructure, and facilitating humanitarian access.

It stressed that Sudanese women, children, and men are paying the price for the continued offensive operations by the combatants.

The statement mentioned that the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra , is continuing to engage with all parties and stakeholders to de-escalate the conflict and promote an inclusive Sudanese-led dialogue for a lasting end to the war.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, expressed deep concern over reports of an imminent RSF attack in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, and the safety of civilians caught in the crossfire.

On January 20, RSF issued a statement containing an ultimatum for the Forces Allied with the Army to leave El-Fasher within 24 hours, while the Army expressed readiness to resist the attack.

The Army and its allies managed to repel an RSF attack on El-Fasher on Friday.

Nkweta-Salami urged all parties to consider the many innocent lives at risk and to reduce tensions.

She reminded the parties to prioritize the protection of civilians according to their obligations under International Humanitarian Law and warned that increased violence would only exacerbate the tragedy for civilians and hinder prospects for peace and stability in Sudan.
